Early Days

Leonabelle Turnbull Birdin Center Port Aransas

Long before tourists, restaurants, and bars came to town, Port Aransas was a narrow stretch of sand on Mustang Island. The indigenous Karankawa people were the first to live in the area. They fished in the Gulf waters, gathered shellfish, and traveled along the coast for thousands of years before European explorers arrived.

Fun fact, for hundreds of years wild horses roamed the island, which is where Mustang Island got its name.

Pirates and Buried Treasure

In the 1800s, the Texas coast became known for pirates, including the villainous Jean Lafitte. Legend says he and his crew used the islands along the Gulf Coast as hiding spots for stolen treasure. Some stories even claim buried treasure could still be hidden somewhere along Mustang Island. Whether or not that’s true, the rumors still abound to this day.

Port Aransas and the Civil War

When the Civil War began in 1861, Port Aransas became much more than a quiet stretch of sand! Ships carrying supplies and soldiers had to pass through the waterways, so controlling it really mattered. Confederate soldiers built defenses in the area trying to protect it from the Union. In 1862, Union forces attacked and eventually captured the Confederate positions, taking control of the channel and using it as a strategic base along the Gulf Coast. It’s wild to think that a war was waged on the very same beaches that people relax on today!

The Birth of Modern Port Aransas

In 1910, the town officially became Port Aransas. The name comes from the Spanish word “Aránzazu”. Over time, the name was shortened and changed slightly to what we know today.

The early 1900s were busy years. Tourists began visiting to fish, swim, and enjoy the sea breeze. Hotels popped up, and the town slowly grew. Fishing became the heart of the community. Tarpon fishing tournaments drew visitors from across the country. In fact, Port Aransas became known as the “Fishing Capital of Texas”!

Surviving Storms

Living on the coast isn’t always easy. Over the years, Port Aransas has faced many powerful hurricanes. One of the most famous was the 1916 Texas Hurricane, which caused major damage along the Texas coast.

More recently, Hurricane Harvey in 2017 hit Port Aransas hard. Homes and businesses were damaged, and many people had to rebuild. Yet, each time a storm has hit, the town has come back stronger.

World War II

Here’s something you might not expect: Port Aransas played a role in World War II! During the war, German U-Boats were spotted in the Gulf of Mexico. The Coast Guard station in Port Aransas helped patrol the waters and protect ships carrying important supplies. Every night, the town enforced a blackout, which was a protective tactic used by civilians during the war. Blacking out the lights prevented reflections on boats, protecting them from enemy submarines. The quiet beach town suddenly became part of a much bigger global story. It’s amazing to think that beneath the waves of the Gulf, history was unfolding!

Becoming a Beach Destination

By the mid-1900s, Port Aransas was growing into the beach town we recognize today. Families came for summer vacations, fishermen came for the legendary catches, and beach cottages began lining the streets.

In 1941, the University of Texas Marine Science Institute opened in Port Aransas. This research center studies ocean life and helps scientists understand the Gulf of Mexico. Students and researchers from around the world now visit the island to learn about marine science.
